Identifying and Targeting Ideal Freelancing Clients

Narrowing your focus doesn’t limit freelancing opportunities—instead, it allows you to become a go-to freelancer for a specific group of clients.

It might seem counterintuitive, but 'any' does not describe any freelancer's ideal clients. Instead, each freelancer has smaller sets of ideal clients created when typical client needs and actual freelancer capabilities are best matched. Focusing on your ideal clients can help establish you as a better choice among many freelancers.

Narrowing your focus doesn’t limit freelancing opportunities—instead, it allows you to become a go-to specialist or expert for a specific group of clients. For example, a graphic designer might focus on branding for technology startups, while a freelance writer might specialize in long-form content for healthcare businesses.

Build an Ideal Client Persona

A persona is a general profile of your ideal client that documents common information among the group. More importantly, only potential clients matching the persona are ideal ones. Consider creating detailed client personas that go beyond the basics through research, interviews, and feedback from previous clients.

Creating client personas helps you tailor your marketing messages to address your target audience’s needs and pain points. By understanding who your ideal clients are and what they care about, you can create more effective marketing campaigns that resonate with them.

Target Ideal Clients

Investing time to determine where your ideal clients learn about problems and solutions is highly beneficial. For example, do they choose online resources, industry events, or colleague networks? Knowing where your ideal clients gather to understand problems and solutions makes it possible for you to participate and get found.

If you’re a freelance business consultant, your ideal clients may use LinkedIn to find and read papers published by industry colleagues. However, your ideal clients may use Google to search for answers if you are a digital marketer. It's important to understand where your clients go to find help and ensure they can find you during that process.

Focus on Actual Pains

Understanding current client problems and challenges is crucial for providing the necessary solutions now. Identifying and explaining problems helps clients understand the risks of ignoring them. Describing and proposing solutions helps clients understand the rewards of fixing them. Both activities showcase the expertise of the freelancer. For example, an ideal client experiencing low website traffic or poor search engine rankings now (i.e., the problem) is more receptive to immediate help from a freelancer specializing in website and search optimization (i.e., the solution).

Clients typically fix problems they are experiencing rather than theoretical or potential ones. Even ideal clients fix problems as they happen, so stay focused on diagnosing actual problems and proposing effective solutions.
